I have been waiting, in vain it would seem, for somebody else to write a review of the same Drag Me to Hell that I saw. The version I sat through was bad. No I hadn’t brought it from some guy at a street market who had burnt off a dodgy copy from the camcorder that he had snuck into his local picture house, my version was brand new. It was just bad cinema.
Sam Raimi Returns to Horror
I know that to show any sort of disrespect toward Sam Raimi, the besuited grand duke of horror, is tantamount to pulling the wings off of George A. Romero’s pet fly; but what has to be said has to be said. Here was a horror that played out like an extended semi-adult version of a Looney Tunes cartoon episode. All that was missing was Acme Corporation product placement and a distantly echoing beep-beep; although there was a scene that involved dropping an anvil on somebody’s head so the homage was not completely lost.
It has of course been stated that this infusion of humor was just the meal that chef Raimi set out to cook. A throwback to earlier days when clunky humor also equaled great horror. Raimi’s previous Evil Dead twology and its evil sister Army of Darkness possessed a charm and darkly cleaver horrific edge that Drag Me to Hell seems to only prod at. They, aided in no small part by the now almost sacred Bruce Campbell, gave the horror genre a set of true humor splattered gore operas to which many have since referred. So why is Drag Me to Hell not also worthy of such unmitigated praise. Well, like I said, it seems it is – just not from me.
